Incense Guide: Sticks, Cones, Coils & Holders

Incense Guide: Sticks, Cones, Coils & Holders

Start with the incense format and a holder made for it. Sticks, ordinary cones, backflow cones and coils need different support. Use this guide to choose your setup, check what comes in the pack, and find practical lighting and care instructions.

Which incense format should you choose?

If you already own a holder, check the formats it supports first. If you are starting from scratch, choose the format you want, then select a compatible holder. Fragrance strength and burn time depend on the individual product; shape alone does not tell you either.

Incense sticks

A straightforward choice when you have a stick holder with an ash-catching area. Check the stick's length and thickness, and whether it has a bamboo core or is coreless. The support must fit that construction.

Ordinary incense cones

Choose a heat-resistant burner designed for cones. Ordinary cones do not create the waterfall effect of a backflow setup. Check the product description carefully because cone collections can contain different types.

Backflow incense cones

Choose these for a waterfall-style smoke display. You need a purpose-made backflow cone with a passage through its base and a compatible backflow burner. Align the cone opening with the burner's opening.

Incense coils

Choose a holder designed to support the coil's shape and diameter and collect its ash. Handle coils gently. Check the listed burn time rather than assuming every coil burns for hours.

Will your incense fit your holder?

  • For sticks: the holder must secure the stick and catch ash along its burning length. A small hole made for a bamboo stem may not fit a thicker coreless stick.
  • For cones: use the intended heat-resistant cone seat. Confirm the cone's base fits without wobbling.
  • For backflow: both pieces must be designed for backflow use. A decorative waterfall shape alone does not establish compatibility.
  • For coils: confirm the holder supports that coil diameter without letting the burning coil touch unsuitable surfaces.

Check the holder's product instructions and dimensions. A product described as an incense holder may support only one format. If the listing does not establish fit, ask us about the specific incense and holder before ordering. Browse incense holders to compare the stated uses.

Four details to check before you buy

  1. Fragrance and variant. Select the actual option you want. A product title or main photo may show one fragrance while the listing offers several.
  2. Pack quantity. Compare the number of sticks, cones or rings in the selected pack. For example, our 120/Box handmade incense sticks and Thuja Incense Coils 120 Rings Big Box are different formats, even though both list 120 pieces.
  3. What is included. Check whether the price covers incense, a holder, or a listed set. Do not assume props in a photo are included.
  4. Your space and time. You need suitable ventilation, a stable heat-resistant surface and time to supervise the burn. Choose a setup you can use according to its instructions.

Lighting, troubleshooting and care

How to Clean an Incense Burner
Check material and finish, clear cooled ash and residue, and know when to ask for product-specific care instructions.

For cleaning: fully extinguish the incense and let the holder and ash cool completely. Follow the care instructions for the holder's material and finish. Remove cooled ash and residue using the recommended method; do not assume every burner can be soaked or scrubbed. Check for damage and blocked openings before reuse.

Smoke and fire precautions

Burning incense releases airborne particles. The US EPA recommends proper ventilation when burning incense indoors. Reducing or avoiding burning reduces this source of indoor particles; a “natural” label does not make smoke harmless.

Stay with burning incense and extinguish it before leaving or sleeping. Keep the holder on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from children, pets and things that can burn. Keep the room ventilated while placing the burner away from direct drafts. The Country Fire Authority recommends at least one metre, about 3.3 feet, of clearance from combustible materials. Follow any greater clearance required by the product instructions.

Common incense questions

Can I use any cone in a waterfall burner?

For the waterfall effect, use a compatible backflow cone with the base opening aligned to the burner. An ordinary solid cone does not provide that smoke passage. Check the instructions for both products.

Are incense sticks or cones stronger?

There is no reliable rule based only on shape. Ingredients, size, fragrance formulation and your room all affect the experience. Compare the details for the specific products rather than treating all cones or all sticks as equally strong.

How long does incense burn?

Use the time stated for the specific product, if provided. Size, formulation and conditions can change duration. A stated burn time is never a reason to leave incense unattended.

Can one holder take sticks, cones and coils?

Only if its instructions explicitly support those formats and the particular sizes fit. Otherwise choose a holder designed for your incense.
