Incense Cones vs Sticks: How to Choose

Incense Cones vs Sticks: How to Choose

Explore the Incense Guide for format choices, holder compatibility, pack details and care.

Choose incense by the holder you have and the experience you want. Sticks need a holder that supports the stick and catches falling ash. Ordinary cones need a heat-resistant cone burner. For a waterfall effect, use purpose-made backflow cones with a compatible backflow burner. Coils need a holder designed for their shape and size.

Incense cones or sticks: which should you choose?

  • Choose sticks if you prefer a slim format and a stick holder. Browse incense sticks.
  • Choose ordinary cones for a compact cone format with ash collected at its base.
  • Choose backflow cones for the visual waterfall effect. Check the product description: not every cone is a backflow cone.
  • Choose coils if you prefer a spiral format and have a compatible coil holder.

Check each product listing for dimensions, quantity and what is included. A holder or burner is not automatically included with incense.

Do cones smell stronger or burn faster than sticks?

Shape alone does not tell you fragrance strength or burn time. The recipe, size, product design and conditions of use all matter. Compare the information for the specific products you are considering rather than assuming every cone is stronger or every stick lasts longer. Follow the lighting and use instructions supplied with that incense.

How are sticks and ordinary cones different?

Incense sticks

Sticks burn along a narrow length. Some have a bamboo core; others are coreless, so check the listing and choose a holder that fits the actual stick. Position it so the full ash-fall area is over the catcher. A small opening that grips one stick may not fit another.

Ordinary incense cones

Ordinary cones sit on their base in a burner made for cones. The base becomes hot, so a decorative plate is not automatically a suitable burner. Ash tends to remain around the cone, but it can still scatter or contain an ember. Leave it undisturbed until fully extinguished and cool.

What is different about backflow cones?

A backflow cone has a purpose-made internal passage and an opening underneath. It works with the opening and channels in a compatible burner to create the downward smoke effect. A regular solid cone will not produce that effect. Browse incense cones, check for explicit backflow compatibility, and use our backflow burner setup guide before lighting.

Where do incense coils fit in?

Incense coils are formed into a spiral. Use the support or burner specified for that coil, with enough space to contain its ash. Do not assume a stick holder or backflow burner also supports coils. Check the individual product for size and any stated burn time; only burn it while you can supervise it.

What care do all four types need?

Use a stable, heat-resistant setup away from combustible items and out of reach of children and pets. Stay with burning incense and extinguish it before leaving the room or going to bed. See London Fire Brigade’s incense fire-safety advice.

Incense smoke contributes particles to indoor air. The EPA recommends proper ventilation when burning incense indoors. Avoid breathing smoke directly, and do not treat a “natural” label as a guarantee that smoke is harmless. Let the incense, ash and holder cool before handling or cleaning.

What should you check before buying?

  • Format: stick, ordinary cone, backflow cone or coil.
  • Fit: the holder’s supported incense type and the product’s dimensions.
  • Contents: incense quantity, chosen scent and whether a holder is listed as included.
  • Care: the manufacturer’s lighting, extinguishing and cleaning instructions.
